Duck River Unit
The Duck River Unit contains a total of 26,743 acres with approximately 6,000 acres in the Duck River Bottoms. The area serves as a wintering ground for migratory ducks and geese, as well as a diversity of wildlife. A series of dikes and water control structures enable Refuge staff to manipulate water levels in impoundments to produce natural foods in abundance for birds.
Biologists call this "moist soil management". Croplands provide traditional agricultural crops such as corn, milo and winter wheat to supplement the natural foods. Combined with adequate water and protection, these food sources attract and hold an average of 125,000 ducks and geese each winter.
This area is a favorite spots for activities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife photography, hiking, wildlife observation and just enjoying the beauty of nature. Pintail Point, a wildlife observation deck is available in the Duck River Bottoms as a vantage point to view wildlife.
Certain areas of this unit are closed from November 15 - March 15 to lessen disturbance to wintering waterfowl.
